Apple iPhone leading the way?

I caught this from Silicon.com today:

Basically, a study of 2,000 mobile phone users showed that 23% of users would prefer a touch screen, as the iPhone has. So, the iPhone is a class leader in mobile phone technology?

Maybe. The report also stated that 28% would prefer a standard button keyboard.

I think that marketing, especially Apple Marketing, will out, and before long, EVERYONE will need a touch screen interface.

UBiQUiO 701 review

Over at Brighthand, they have a review of the UBiQUiO 701 UMPC.

This isn’t to say that the UBiQUiO 701 is in itself bad–while it does have negative qualities, in my opinion it is by and large a good representative of its class…

The problem with this, as in any other UMPC, is “what the hell do I use it for?” Microsoft say it should be used with a normal laptop. That is one chunk of money to lay out.

Palm Foleo criticism

Oh dear. Jakob Nielsen, king of usability (or at least he was until other people caught on) has the knives out for the poor old Palm Foleo.

He has a rant about it on his Useit website here, which is perhaps a little unkind. The poor thing’s barely out of its swaddling clothes, and Jakob Herod is after it.

He does have a point about the large phone next to it, and I would have thought basic dimensions on a portable device would be essential.

It’s a shame. I rather like it. It reminds me rather of the sweet Psion Series 7.

OQO review

Over at the Gadgeteer, I’ve just read this fairly extensive review of the OQO Model 2. It looks an amazing bit of kit, fully-featured, capable of running most normal standard software (MS Office, for instance), and has Wi-Fi built in (of course). She’s a beaut!

This is what I’m talking about - a fully-functional, wearable computer. Brill, isn’t it?

Here’s a link to PARVUS who make the thing. It can support Windows CE or Linux, has a touch screen, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and an integrated GPS.

For my money ( which ain’t a lot) I think the ergonomics are a bit screwy, and the thing needs to be a bit longer in the length department, and a bit narrower in the width department. But it ain’t half bad. It needs to be a little less obtrusive, so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a Blood Pressure Monitor full time, which would be a bit sad.
